HEALTH AND WEALTH

A festive greeting to you all and a healthy and wealthy 2013.

HIGHLIGHT'S OF THE YEAR?
Their are a couple of highlights from 2012.
Qcon was a great weekends gaming and a definite must for next year. The growth of 'The Loaded Dice' club which continues to expand and welcome new members.

These are a selection of the games I got to play this year and enjoyed the most.

FAMILY GAME OF THE YEAR:
"Survive: Escape from Atlantis!".

GATEWAY GAME OF THE YEAR:
"Ticket to Ride Europe"

PARTY GAME OF THE YEAR:
"The Resistance"

BOARD WARGAME OF THE YEAR:
"Hammer of the Scots"

STRATEGY GAME OF THE YEAR:
"Puerto Rico"

ON THE RADAR FOR 2013?
I am interested to see how "The Guns of Gettysburg" develops. Its finally to be released this year by new publishers Mercury Games.

According to Board Game Geek

"The Guns of Gettysburg is a simulation of the largest battle of the American Civil War. The game is derived from the system used in Bowen Simmons's previous games: Bonaparte at Marengo and Napoleon's Triumph. Units in the game are represented by linear blocks rather than the traditional hex and counters.

The Guns of Gettysburg is designed to have simple rules and fast play, while at the same time reflecting the historical limitations of the actual conflict. The game's rules are refined somewhat from its predecessors but overall reflect the same fast play as its predecessors.

Players are able to play single day scenarios or the full three day battle."

You can check out Bowen Simmons the designer's game diary for more details.

PODCAST FIND OF THE YEAR:
I found the "Gun's Dice and Butter" wargaming podcast at the start of the year. It features a series of conversations with members of the wargaming tribe hosted by Herr Dr. Well worth a listen.

BLOG FIND OF THE YEAR:
I stumbled across this blog while on my ramblings across the world wide web. It records the development in pictures of Lees project for 2012. Lee has re created the Peninsular War in 6mm, using Baccus figures and 'Commands & Colors' rules. The 'therapy' of painting model soldiers and wargaming has helped him with his battle against long term chronic depression. A top blog, you can visit it at:

GOALS FOR 2013.
To introduce more people to the joys of board and wargaming. To hook up with a few gents I have been in contact with via this blog over the past year. Conrad from the Joy and Forgetfulness blog and the KoffeeKlub  crew. Hopefully we may get a few games together at some stage.

Great idea Declan, let's arrange a meeting or two early this year. I'd like to (amongst other things) talk about Hammer of the Scots with you as we had a luke-warm play-through in the summer.

Cheers
