POPULAR FRONT.

Popular Front.

"Over all of Spain, the sky is clear."

On July 17, 1936, this phrase was broadcast throughout Spain, signalling the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

Mr Postman came a calling last week with the above package, "Popular Front". Popular Front is produced by Numbskull games and depicts the struggle for control of Spain during the Spanish civil war. The game plays in 90-120 minutes with 2-6 players taking on the role of either the Requetes, Socialists, Anarchists, Carlists, Communists or Falange.

Map.

Cards.

The game map while not huge is mounted and very functional. The cards are a joy with each one containing an image from a propaganda posters used during the conflict. The game play according to "BGG" is light and fun. The rules which I have read are deceptively simple, yet contain a rich diversity of possible implementations.

My go to game for more than four players is "El Grande" a wonderful area control game from the mid 90's. I have wanted another multi player game for a while and when "Popular Front" appeared on Ebay the paypal account had to be lightened. I will be attending a day long gaming event in Sligo at the start of the month so lets hope - over all of Sligo, the sky is clear. (I should add that if you know Sligo at all, then you will know that the Sligo sky is often quite likely to contain rain) I very much look forward to getting a game in of this interesting Euro, wargame hybrid.
